Extra-Curricular

While academics are the primary focus at HLS, Highlands Latin also has a full schedule of social and sporting events to for our well-rounded students.  To begin the school year the full student body, led by a bagpiper, knock on the wooden doors of the school sanctuary and ask permission to enter.  After being granted admission and joining parents and faculty in the school song, students begin a schedule that not only entails academics but a delightful schedule of social and sporting events.

Shortly after the start of the year, Upper School students, joined by Mr Cothran and his band of merry faculty, travel to the annual Upper School Retreat, where they have the opportunity to welcome new classmates and form a bond with their faculty and peers.  Lower school parents also begin parent coffes for each grade where they have a chance to meet fellow families and develop a closer relationship with teachers.  Later in the year, the Lower and Upper Schools have additional boys and girls retreats to foster a collegial school atmosphere.

Fall is also the start of Highlands Latin's ever growing sports programs.  Throughout the year students may participate in Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Fencing, Golf, and Cross Country.  And, after witnessing several fierce competitions, we sometimes choose to include the Highlands Latin Chess Team within the purview of our sports program.  Each year the sports offerings grow at Highlands Latin under the watchful eye of Mr. Ashby with the goal of providing an opportunity for our students to become better friends and compete in a sportsman like manner.Girls Retreat

Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of intermural competitions, performances, events through their House System, in which each Upper School student joins one of four houses in their 7th grade year.  As students advance in the Upper School, they are also able to advance into leadership positions within each House, all in hopes of besting their competing Houses in academics, athletics, and community service.

DancePerhaps the students' favorite events during the year are the series of dances each House hosts.  Always boasting an interesting theme, the dances are a wonderful opportunity for Highlands Latin students to get together with their fellow classmates and peers from other schools.  Each dance throughout the year raises money for the Graduation Ball which is typically held in a Seelbach Ballroom or at majestic Garden Court.

Highlands Latin has several full school events where families and students across all ages have a chance to meet.  The first major event of the year is the HLS Hayride in Bardstown, KY where tractor (and mule) rides, adventure hikes, picnicking, and a bonfire on a 300 Cantataacre farm provide a full day's activity.  A few months later, the school including grandparents are invited in for our chef's famous Thanksgiving Feast.  At Christmas, the full school Latin Choir packs the thousand seat sanctuary for their annual Christmas Cantata.  And, as school winds down with Awards Night, Field Day, and a Closing School Ceremony performance cap off the year.

The faculty at Highlands Latin believe the primary purpose of a school is education, but carefully planned social and sporting events can assist in graduating well-rounded students.  There is a fine line balancing academics with the demands of extra-curriculars.  At Highlands Latin, we are constantly working to maintain that perfect balance.
