If you were asked, “Should the U.S. government value rehabilitation over retribution in the Criminal Justice System?” how would you respond? Once you comprehended the question, would you be able to then respond with a clear and logical argument? Could you defend your answer, too?

On January 19, the HLS Debate team competed in the Kentucky State Debate Tournament. HLS’s team participated in the Lincoln-Douglas style policy debate: one-on-one debates against students from other schools. The topic of the debate was the question posed above, however students did not know which side they would be asked to argue until a few minutes before they began. HLS’s strongest competition was Dupont Manual High School, a team of over 30 members. In a tournament the scores are calculated by adding the top eight individual scores per team. The team with the highest total wins. Score points are awarded based on how a student presents his or her case, the quality of the argument, style, delivery, and various other factors throughout the debate rounds. The HLS team composed of a mere seven students, lost first place to Manual by a single point.

The HLS team spent weeks preparing for the event by discussing and brainstorming ideas for their case, practicing debating each other, and receiving valuable critiques from their new coach, Mr. Aaron Whaley. Mr. Whaley, an HLS parent and practicing attorney, debated in high school and continued into college, participating in WKU debate, where his team won the National Forensic League Lincoln-Douglass debate his senior year. Mr. Whaley graduated from UK Law School in 2002 where he was also on the debate team which competed in the national tournament.

The HLS team attributes their success to Coach Whaley and to each other.

“We really are like a family” stated Junior, Rebecca Musal. The rest of the members followed suit, explaining that though debate is an individual-based competition, they rely on each other. Despite their novice disposition, the HLS team has found itself victorious over teams that have competed at the national level. They are even looking to expand their practices into national policy debate, as well as continuing their current Lincoln-Douglass policy debates.

The HLS debate team is open to 9th-12th grade students. Given their recent incredible success, a few more members would help the team accomplish even greater feats. The HLS community is proud of the team’s success, and eager to see what new challenges these determined students will overcome.

Favorite Thing at HLS: The things that I like best about HLS are my awesome teachers and great friends!

About Julia: I was born in Marietta, Georgia, but have lived in Louisville for the past seven years. I enjoy ballet, playing piano, sewing, and doing crafts in my spare time. Most recently I had the honor of performing with the Louisville Ballet as a, “party girl”, in the Brown-Foreman Nutcracker. Boy, was it exciting to dance alongside the professional dancers and in front of such a large audience! It was an enriching and rewarding experience

What Julia is doing: Julia was just nominated for the Children’s Fine Art Classes, when asked about it she replied, “I feel honored to have been selected for the CFAC program and am quite excited! I am looking forward to learning new art techniques.”

On Saturday, January 19th, the Spring Meadows campus was abuzz as schools from around the Louisville area descended on our campus to test their academic wit in the Governor’s Cup District Competition. With registration beginning at 7:30 AM and an awards ceremony in the late afternoon, HLS students, parents, and volunteers were in for a long, yet exciting day.

The Governor’s Cup Competition consists of individual assessments in science, math, language arts, social studies, and art and humanities. Students also compete in writing competitions, future problem solving, and the traditional favorite, Quick Recall. The HLS Academic Team won the District Championship with the highest point total.

The competition started early in the morning with the individual student assessments. Highlands Latin School came ready to compete! HLS students swept Language Arts with Jack Spurlock in first place, Elizabeth Arterberry in second, and RyAnn Schoenbaechler in third. Ben Ragsdell took home medals in math and science with impressive 2nd and 3rd place finishes, respectively. Matthew Rouse placed second in composition, with Elizabeth Arterberry taking fourth. In Social Studies, Tanner Petrie took second place and Ryann Schoenbaechler took third place. Last but not least, Tanner Petrie and Madison Sneve tied for first place in Arts and Humanities, with William Strange earning fifth place honors.

After the morning assessments, HLS students were well on their way to a very successful tournament. Just before lunch, the Quick Recall Team squared off against last year’s champion, Holy Spirit. The Highlanders took the match convincingly and moved on to the next round, where they faced Our Lady of Lourdes. In a closely contested final match the HLS students held their composure and went on to win the match, and ultimately the Quick Recall tournament.

Around 4:30 PM, after all the competitions had ended and the points had been tallied…Highlands Latin School earned the most tournament points and was declared DISTRICT CHAMPION.

HLS parents Amanda Petrie and Victoria Ragsdell coached team members Aiden Arnold, Jobe Arnold, Elizabeth Arterberry, Worden Barr, Mitchell Halsema, Tanner Petrie, Ben Ragsdell, Matthew Rouse, RyAnn Schoenbaechler, Madison Sneve, Jack Spurlock, Mary Grace Stachnik, William Strange, Miles Thompson, and William Yates, who all worked hard for this victory.

Eighth grade parent Cindy Barr graciously volunteered to take up the responsibilities of Contest Manager. Sydney Veith and Austin Schmitt operated the buzzer system for the entire day, while Hunter Abrams and Joshua Steinbach helped take photos and run the concessions.

The Highlands Latin School community celebrates this achievement.
