Brian Lowe, son of Highlands Latin founder Cheryl Lowe, is a graduate of St. Xavier High School, a National Merit Finalist, with a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Transylvania University and a J.D., summa cum laude, from Vanderbilt Law School in 2002. He managed a rare achievement for a law student when his research project on predicting the outcome of the Supreme Court was cited by a MIT Mathematics professor and a UCLA Law professor in the Minnesota Law Review. Brian was classically educated by Cheryl Lowe as she developed many of the courses that are carried on by Memoria Press today. Brian is the business manager for Highlands Latin School, Memoria Press, Vittitow Refrigeration. He also manages the family's property development firm, which owns approximately 220,000 sq ft of industrial and commerical property. Brian and his wife, Leigh, have two preschoolers. |

Cody King has a B.A. in Christian Studies from Union University in Jackson, TN. Originally from Las Vegas, NV, he was raised in a military family and has lived all over the states. In high school he was interested in both sports and drama, and managed to combine the two when he auditioned for Romeo and Juliet in his football gear! Mr. King has a great sense of humor, is a serious scholar, and is looking forward to his first year at HLS. |

Dana G
erber teaches Plane Geometry and 9th grade English. She is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas and is certified to teach English, history, and math. Mrs. Gerber is an experienced teacher with the rare ability to teach in both the math and language sides of the curriculum. Dana is married with two children. |

Robert Hublar, has a B.A. in Physics from Bellarmine College and a M.A. in Education with a major in math and physics from Indiana University. He joined Highlands Latin after retiring from Louisville's Trinity High School, where he taught physics for 39 years. Mr. Hublar is a master teacher who was taught by master teachers himself, the Xaverian brothers at the old St. Xavier High School on Broadway. He is always available to give extra help to students, and he makes physics a challenging but enjoyable experience for students. |

Laura Gentry graduated from Hillsdale College with a B.A. in German and the Classics. Ms. Gentry is originally from Canada, is well-traveled, and loves languages. Her hobbies include swimming, camping, kayaking, hiking, reading, piano and guitar. Ms. Gentry is looking forward to her first year teaching at HLS and studying great literature with her students. |

James Ryan West received a B.A. in Biblical Studies and History from Union University and an M.Div in Internation Missions from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. West joins our faculty to teach 10th-12th grade Classical Studies and Latin. He and his wife, Danielle, have three young children, the oldest of which will begin first grade at HLS this year. Mr. West and his family have lived in India and still enjoy Indian food. He is looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to the excellent education of his students while seeing his son experience the same blessing.

Steven Lange, pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Louisville, teaches Latin IV in the Lower School and Cicero in the Upper School. He received his B.A. from Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota and a M. Div. from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in 1997. His previous teaching experience includes teaching Greek at Martin Luther College in Minnesota. He and his wife, Krista, have three children, two of whom attend HLS. |
Stephen Long teaches Greek I and II and Latin at HLS. He graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech with a double major in Math and Classical Studies in 2004. While getting his Master's degree from the University of Virginia in 2006, he wrote a thesis called "A Duel and a Wall: the Narrative Contribution of Iliad 7." Mr. Long was also a teaching assistant during graduate studies and experienced classical education training in high school. His love of the classics and language is evident in the classroom. |

| Joshua Wood has a B.S. in Building Construction from Virginia Tech. and joins our faculty to teach 7th and 8th grade Math and 7th grade Geography. He is the oldest of four boys and is going to be a first time uncle to a nephew due in December. Mr. Wood enjoys hiking, backpacking, camping, and rock climbing. He is hoping to begin training for a triathalon very soon. Mr. Wood is excited to get a chance to show his students that math and geography are not only applicable, but fun! |
Liz Taylor joined our faculty in 2007 to teach Kindergarten. She has six years of formal teaching experience and maintained a highly creative classroom atmosphere at several schools. Mrs. Taylor holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from Lambuth College with additional courses in art education. She is a seven year art business owner of Lizzart, which specializes in calligraphy artwork. She and her husband have raised four daughters, which has given her unique skills and a love for children, which she gladly brings to HLS. |
Dana Brian holds a B.S. in Corrections from Eastern Kentucky University and joined our faculty in 2007 to teach Kindergarten. She brings one and a half years of substitute teaching in the Louisville area, and she also homeschooled one of her daughters for three years before both daughters became students at HLS. Dana enjoys camping, traveling, working with children, and gardening. To HLS she contributes her natural gifts in nurturing, encouraging, and spreading the joy of learning in a disciplined environment. |

Karen Oakley has a B.A. and an M.A. in Education from Murray State University and recently completed two courses in gifted education. She has six years of prior teaching experience in the elementary grades and joins our faculty to teach Wednesday/Friday Kindergarten. Mrs. Oakley is married to Jason, and they moved to Louisville in 2006, along with their children, Erica and Jonathan, who are students at HLS. Mrs. Oakley's hobbies include reading, music, photography, and scrapbooking. She is excited to watch her students grow both academically and socially their first year of school. |
Kelly Booker joined our faculty in 2007 to teach first grade. She has six years of teaching experience with children ages two to six. She has the ability to foster children's passion for learning through enthusiasm and an organized, caring, and stimulating environment. Kelly received her B.S. and M.A. from Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY, in Business Administration. Her children attend HLS, and she is an enthusiastic and creative addition to our school. |
Tessa Tiemann serves as one of our two 1st grade teachers. Tessa earned a B.A. in music and a M.S. in choral conducting from the University of Kentucky. She brings years of teaching experience and a distinguished career in music to HLS. Her ability to capture and sustain the attention of a large choir group is remarkable. Tessa is married with three sons, two of whom attend HLS. |

| Courtney Moore received a B.A. in Religion from the University of Mobile, lived in Costa Rica for two years, and is fluent in Spanish. She joins our faculty to teach one of our 2nd grade classes. She previously taught 3rd and 4th grade at Covenant Classical Academy in Louisville. She and her husband, Brent, who is also a new faculty member, teaching the 6th grade, have been married for two years. Mrs. Moore is looking forward to being a part of the HLS family. |
Brenda Janke graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin, Eu Claire and teaches 3rd grade. Before coming to HLS, she gained wide teaching experience at several schools where she taught Latin and 4th-6th grades. Brenda’s organizational skills, gentle nature and experience in the classroom are appreciated by students and parents alike. |
Anne Parry teaches 3rd grade at HLS where she is an extraordinarily organized and conscientious teacher. Anne earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Georgia, and though she was tempted to attend vet school, she opted to pursue her family’s traditional craft of teaching. Anne had teaching experience in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 2nd grade before she came to HLS where she uses her skills to assist our 3rd graders in the transition from primary to grammar school. |
Laura Bateman joined our faculty in 2007 to teach fourth grade. She has experience teaching third grade as well as high school music. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a minor in Professional Education from Union University in Jackson, TN, in 2006. Laura greatly enjoys music and being with her husband, whom she married in December of 2006. |
Brett Vaden joined our faculty in 2007 to teach fourth grade. He is a 2004 graduate of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago with a degree in Biblical Languages. He brings a year and a half of teaching experience from substituting with Jefferson C ounty Public Schools and being a physical education instructor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he is currently attending to receive an M.Div. in Biblical and Theological Studies. Mr. Vaden's wife, Rachael, also works at HLS, as the Administrative Assistant, and they enjoy getting to work together. |

| Bethan Rogers received a B.A. in English (with a focus on literature and rhetoric) with a degree plan in Secondary Education from Texas A&M University. She has experience as a classroom teacher and a tutor, and joins our faculty to teach our 6th grade girls. Mrs. Rogers and her husband, Brandon, are professional photographers, and she has decorated her classroom with some of their work. She is looking forward to getting to know her students this year. |
| Brent Moore received a B.A. in Communications/Political Science and Religion from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Moore has experience in classical education and joins our faculty to teach our 6th grade boys. He is married to Courtney, who will be a new 2nd grade teacher. He is very enthusiastic about teaching and is excited to come to work every day. |

Shawn Wheatley, Principal of Highlands Latin School, has a B.A. in Biology from Transylvania University, an M.A. in Education from the University of Kentucky, and an M.S. in School Administration from Bellarmine. Shawn has taught algebra, chemistry, biology, physics, and earth science to middle and high school students since 1998. Often developing his own materials, he was nominated by his peers for the Aneon Award for Outstanding Science Teacher in Jefferson County. In addition to his administrative duties, Shawn teaches The Iliad and Odyssey to 7th graders and astronomy to 3rd graders. Shawn and his wife, Georganna, have three sons.
Leigh Lowe, author of Memoria Press' beginning Latin program, Prima Latina, is a writer and curriculum developer for Memoria Press and was one of the founding instructors of Highlands Latin School. Leigh holds a B.A. in Business with a minor in Computer Science from Transylvania University and an M.B.A. from the University of Louisville. She received the Newkirk-Moore Award for Female Entrepreneurs in 2000 and the Landrum Rotary Fellows Award for Leadership in 2001. Leigh was recently included in the "Forty under 40" issue of Business First magazine, featuring young business leaders in the Louisville area. Leigh started her own business, the highly successful
Mary Lynn Ross is Director of Admissions and the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Lander University. Mrs. Ross is from Charleston, South Carolina, where she taught for six years before moving to Louisville. She has a wide knowledge of children's literature and has written our literature guides for 1st and 2nd Grade. She and her husband, Gregory, have a daughter who is a graduate of HLS, and a son who is an HLS 11th grader.
Dr. Louie L. Bailey is minister of music at Crescent Hill Baptist Church where he administers a music program of eleven musical groups for all ages, including choirs, handbells, voice classes, and orchestra. Dr. Bailey, a native of Decatur, Georgia, is a graduate of Georgia State University with a B.A. in Music (Piano and Music Education). He earned a M.A. in Church Music and a Ph.D. in Musical Arts (Voice and Music Education) from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Bailey works with the Louisville Youth Choir as director of the Louisville Children’s Choir and is assistant director of the Preparatory Choir. Dr. Bailey’s musical experience is extensive, having conducted such diverse works as Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and Mozart’s Requiem. Dr. Bailey’s wife, June, is also a gifted music teacher. The Baileys have two grown sons who live here in Louisville.
munrud teaches Latin, Logic, Algebra II, and PSAT Prep. at HLS. He graduated summa cum laude from the Master's College in California with a B.A. in Biblical Languages and is working on a graduate degree at Southern Seminary. Joel has studied abroad in Israel, learning Biblical history, geography, and archaeology. In addition to his teaching duties, Joel tutors students in Latin and helps prepare them for the PSAT and SAT.

Carrie Christensen, a graduate of Centre College, has completed her research for a Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Louisville. While working on her M.S. at Tennessee Tech. she taught human anatomy and physiology, conducted research in animal behavior, and in her spare time, milked cows on her family’s dairy farm! Carrie teaches biology and anatomy and physiology at HLS and coordinates science activities for the lower school. She also teaches anatomy and physiology to nursing students at the local community college.
Martin Cothran is a writer and teacher who lives in Danville, Kentucky with his wife and four children. He is the author of Memoria Press' Traditional Logic, Material Logic, and Classical Rhetoric programs, which he teaches at HLS. Mr. Cothran also developed and manages Memoria Press' online academy. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from the Simon Greenleaf School. He still serves, on a consulting basis, as senior policy analyst with The Family Foundation of Kentucky. He practices the art of rhetoric in frequent articles on public policy issues that have appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Louisville Courier-Journal, The Lexington Herald-Leader, and various other newspapers around the state. He has served on several state commissions dealing with state education policy and has been a frequent guest on KET's "Kentucky Tonight" program.
Ken Dennis taught 6th grade Social Studies and Reading at Jefferson Country Traditional School for 16 years and middle school science at St. Leonard School for 3 years. With 11 additional years of teaching and private tutoring, Mr. Dennis brings a wealth of experience to Highlands Latin. Mr. Dennis was twice named Outstanding Teacher of History in Kentucky (1986 and 1989), as well as being honored as the Outstanding Teacher of Social Studies in 1986. His numerous other awards include the Campbellsville University Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002. Mr. Dennis is collector of both facinating anecdotes and historic memorabilia, both of which he uses to enrich his high school classes in American and Modern European history.

In fact, they met while running their first marathon in Alaska!

Joyce Aspatore brings 29 years of teaching experience to our Primary Program as the 2nd grade teacher. Joyce received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University, after which she began her long tenure with Jefferson County Schools, from which she retired several years ago. Offering both expertise and enthusiasm, routine reading and arithmetic lessons are turned into memorable events in her classrooms, where a love of books and learning is carefully nurtured. Joyce and her husband have two grown daughters.

Laura Beth O’Nan earned a degree in music from the University of Mississippi, and a M.A. in theological studies from Southern Seminary. She has a passion for healthy eating and for art, and currently works part-time as the curator of an art museum. Mrs. O'Nan, who is in her third year at HLS, is organized, creative, and enthusiastic. She enjoys the challenge of our 5th grade curriculum, and the opportunity to teach an all-girls class, for whom she is a wonderful role model.
Tanya Charlton has a B.A. in English from Milligan College and a B.S. in Accounting from Troy State University. She is the past owner of Charlton Tax and Accounting Service in New Castle, Kentucky and a free-lance copy editor for Shoemaker and Hoard Publishers in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Charlton and her husband, Dave, have two boys, Nick and Tyler, who have attended Highlands Latin School for eight years. Mrs. Charlton wrote our 5th grade curriculum and has authored several study guides for Memoria Press. Mrs. Charlton is the curriculum coordinator for grades 3-6.
Jim Ashby received a B.S. from Murray State in Physical Education. He teaches all P.E. classes at HLS and has single-handedly developed our physical education program and written our curriculum and goals. He teaches P.E. to kindergartners through 6th grade, and manages the club sports competitions for the Upper School House system. He is the head coach of our Varisty, Junior Varsity, and Middle School basketball teams and will continue to develop sports programs in the coming years. Mr. Ashby has inspired our students to value fitness and good sportsmanship.
